Basically though, for IHB registration, if you possess paperwork to verify your pony’s breeding, e.g. marking charts, a horse board passport, or a foal passport, it may not be necessary to take further blood or DNA tests. Those whose claim is based on verbal assurance only will need DNA checks, which can be carried out through the N.I.H.B. However they will need to know the identity of the Connemara parent, as the " needle in a haystack " approach is simply not viable ! At present the estimate of cost for this procedure is £85 for the registration, and £30 for the DNA analysis in the case of animals of four years and over. Additional expense may be involved where a parent, though purebred, has not previously been DNA tested or blood-typed.
We trust this advice is sufficient to inform and assist our members with the above procedures. Please contact the secretary if further advice is required.
It must be emphasised that hair samples taken for DNA analysis must be clean, dry and pulled with the roots intact. Cut hairs are not suitable.
