SILVER DAPPLE PARTBRED

What a stunning colour !

These two photos were received in March 2011 from Jeannine Burren, Western Australia. Jeannine  explains that the Silver Dapple dilution gene runs in the Welsh ponies, but not generally in the Connemara breed, unless bred in through a Welsh source. It can also be referred to as the ' taffy ' gene, probably because of it's Welsh origins.

Clare Downs Silver Magic, pictured here, is genetically a black pony, but with the silver dapple gene diluting the mane and tail to a silvery blonde, and the body to a chocolate colour.  This colour is seen most commonly in the Rocky Mountain Horse of the U.S. ,

in which it is a recognised breed characteristic.

    Jeaninne goes on to say
" This is a pic of one of our Black Silver Welsh x Connemara fillies at 2 yrs of age.  In Paddock condition ( top picture ) and then at 3 1/2  with her 13 yr old owner at their first show where she won Champion Partbred Connemara,   Champion Partbred Welsh and Supreme Champion Silver and went on to win Grand Supreme Dilute.  Her mum said she couldn't wipe the smile off her face (or the pony's ! )  for a week !  Cute hey ? "

I'd love one or two, wouldn't you ?

Received January 2011 from New Zealand, from mother and daughter Tina & Grace, and their pony, Liberty.

Our boy is Escondido Liberty Gold (section 3-Reg No P.G.153) - he is by Bunrattys Kerry Gold (Reg No R.S.12) out of a mare 'Lady' whom we are told is a Welsh/riding pony. Liberty's breeders are S.R. & C.R. McLean of Waihopai Valley in Blenheim (South Is)..

We have had Libs since he was 2 & a bit, Grace backed him herself, we do everything with him & he loves to do everything. He has won NZ Connemara Performance Award 2 years running for Most Versatile. His favourite is hunting to the hounds !

We now live in Dargaville (West Coast of the top of the North Island) and it is very hot & we are broaching drought mode for the 2nd summer in a row-a vast difference to the other side of the World at the moment. We are from the South Island - know Temuka well & have very good friends down there, tis truly one of the beautiful spots of NZ.

Here is a sort of website of ours - nothing special-but shows Liberty: http://portanger.multiply.com/photos
And have attached a photo of him at a 2008 A&P in the Pony Saddle Hunter section.
I will send a couple of professional photos of him shortly (they are uploading from the disk) of him Horse Trialing at our local HT - in which he held his own against the big horses & came in 7th. We were very proud of him - he had professionals on their young horses in that class - like Vaughn Jeffries (an International name {grin}).
You are welcome to use any of the photos - thats if they are good enough.

We also welcome a valued opinion of our Liberty as to how he compares with other Part Breds?!

Many many Thanks once again for your help.
Regards
Tina & Grace

What About the Part-breds ?????

The 2010 HSBC Classic 3DE at Badminton from April 30th to May 3rd, 2010, saw a field of 83 starters whittled down after three days of intense competition over the world renowned course, with the smallest horse in the trial flying the flag for the Connemara !  Finishing a fantastic fourteenth with young Camilla Speirs from Kildare aboard for her first ever encounter with the Badminton course was the 10 y-o bay gelding, ' Portersize Just a Jiff '.   The sire of this admirable steed is Crosskeys Rebel ( S 997 ), the buckskin coloured son of  Island Lad  ( S 850 ), and the dam, Mizen Talent by Mizen Melody (TB ), who stood with NI breeder Philip White at Maddybenny Stud near Coleraine. In their third outing this year, and  first 4 star event, Just a Jiff and his rider were the best Irish team after the dressage phase with a score of 48.3 in 27th place.  At only 15.1, size proved no obstacle to the talented pair in international company, their score of 9.2 penalties on the XC phase bringing them up to an incredible 13th place.  After the showjumping phase, Camilla and Just a Jiff dropped only one place in the prestigious competition, where the field was drawn from 11 different countries.

As our chairman is wont to say - " What about the part-breds ?? ".   Our very best congratulations go to Just a Jiff and all his family and connection ! There are several links on Google to professional photographs of Just a Jiff.

It is hoped to get further classes for Part-bred Connemara ponies in the future. If you are interested in competing, for more information contact finola.mulholland@btopenworld.com

Purely The Part-Breds

The members of the N.I. Connemara Pony Breeders Association were the first Connemara group to formally recognise the value of the part-bred Connemara, and their contribution to the equestrian scene. It was voted in 2007 that the interest of the group extend to include part-bred Connemaras, which were defined as ponies with known parentage which can be proven to be 50% or more of Connemara breeding. Those who already have the breeding recorded in their passports will have no further procedures to go through, providing one or other parent is registered in the studbook of the Connemara Pony Breeders Society or any of the daughter societies, for example the British Connemara Pony Society.

According to advice sought from the N.I.Horse Board, where such ponies have hitherto been eligible for Irish Horse Board registration, it may take a little while to phase in any part-breds who need to prove parentage. Owners of these ponies are advised to contact Charlotte Kilpatrick at the N.I.H.B. office. The address is 23, Ballykeigle Road, Comber. BT23 5 SD, Telephone 028 9752 8324. The office telephone is attended on Monday and Thursday mornings. Alternatively e-mail the secretary at charlotte@nihorseboard.org.

After NICPBA negotiations with the British Connemara Pony Society, the BCPS  agreed in 2008 to extend their area of jurisdiction in order to include part-bred Connemara ponies domiciled in N.Ireland, so offering owners a choice of registration authority. The BCPS does not ask for DNA verification at present. Visit their website for details.

Basically though, for IHB registration, if you possess paperwork to verify your pony’s breeding, e.g. marking charts, a horse board passport, or a foal passport, it may not be necessary to take further blood or DNA tests. Those whose claim is based on verbal assurance only will need DNA checks, which can be carried out through the N.I.H.B.  However they will need to know the identity of the Connemara parent, as the " needle in a haystack " approach is simply not viable ! At present the estimate of cost for this procedure is £85 for the registration, and £30 for the DNA analysis in the case of animals of four years and over. Additional expense may be involved where a parent, though purebred, has not previously been DNA tested or blood-typed.

We trust this advice is sufficient to inform and assist our members with the above procedures. Please contact the secretary if further advice is required.

It must be emphasised that hair samples taken for DNA analysis must be clean, dry and pulled with the roots intact. Cut hairs are not suitable.

 Sweet Sucess

Clare Brown of Downpatrick was a member of the East Down Pony Club Team at the 2006 Pony Club Home Championships. Riding her part-bred Connemara pony, Meenagolan Siucra , she was placed 6th in the individual , while the East Down team was second  Siucra ( which means 'Sugar' in English,  is by Ferdia out of Lovely Silver (by Beltra Foggy).  Sweet sucess indeed !
