Rare Breeds Show 2009

Rare Breeds Survival Trust Show At Gosford Park, Markethill
5th September

Photographs copyright of NICPBA UNLESS OTHERWISE CREDITED.

The NICPBA Committee were delighted to welcome once again as sponsors for this event Irwin's Bluegrass Horse Feeds, Ewing Brothers Transport, and The Equestrian Store, Portadown. Please support our sponsors in return.

The NICPBA wish to express, on behalf of the members and exhibitors, their sincere appreciation to the judge, Mr. Andy O'Donoghue, who travelled from Co.Clare with his son, Cillian, in order to officiate. He is a sound and generous man, with a lifetime's experience in ponies, having grown up with Connemaras. His good-hearted nature was evident in the Young Handler's Class in particular, as, in the true spirit of the event, he took the trouble to be especially encouraging to the younger exhibitors !  Seldom does a judge take the time to explain the reasons for his decisions, and it is the sign of integrity when he does.
We hope and trust that everyone enjoyed their day, as this show is organised by the members, for our members and friends ( old and new ! ), with a relaxed atmosphere and a warm welcome for all !  It was good to have on board the Native ponies, represented on this occasion by Dartmoor, Exmoor and Kerry Bog Ponies.  All these could enter the ridden class and Championship, and the Young Handlers.  Apologies, therefore, for altering the entry conditions in the Y/H class, which was originally for handlers aged 12-18.  Because we had enquiries regarding younger folk who wished to show, it was decided to allow this providing they were accompanied in the ring by an adult.
In addition to our sponsors named above, for whose continued support we are extremely grateful, it is worthy of mention that thanks are due to Mrs.Lesley Harvey, who procured the rug and numnah presented on behalf of the NICPBA to the Ridden Champion and Reserve. Also to Mr.Cecil Rainey of Derrymattery Connemara Ponies, who negotiated once again with The Equestrian Store and provided vouchers for each of the classes.  The Kerry Bog Pony Class was sponsored by Donegreagh Connemara Ponies, each prizewinner receiving a syringe of horse wormer. Miller's Hill Equestrian Centre, Markethill, contributed to the prizes received by the children in the Young Handlers Class - great kids all of them, we are sure you will agree !

Thanks also to Craig Kilief, representing our major sponsors, Irwin's Bluegrass Horsefeeds. Pictured above, Craig presented the Championship rosette to James Naan, whose 2 y-o filly also receives a Bluegrass Rug.  Craig was pleased with the enquiries about Bluegrass feed, whose product range is headed by their Stamm 30 Balancer, a formulation particularly suited to native pony diets.  The ration is backed by extensive work on equine metabolism carried out at the Kentucky Equine Research facility in the U.S.  See www.bluegrasshorsefeed.com .

Having helped him pack away all his meal samples and stand afterwards, I can testify that being a meal rep is harder work than it looks !

To present their Qualifying Rosettes to the foals who will be going through to The All Ireland Champion Connemara Foal Final, which takes place at The Country Comes to Town on September 19th, was Mr. Joe Topley, esteemed founding member of the NICPBA.

In gratitude for their hospitality in providing space at their Show in 2008, the NICPBA were able to donate to the RBST charity from funds raised, and look forward to supporting the trust again on this occasion. Though the Connemara breed is lucky enough to be strong in numbers, the same cannot be said of several of the Native Pony breeds. Each unique to it's own region, breeds such as the Dartmoor, Exmoor and Eriskay have distinct characteristics and talents, which are much valued by enthusiasts and dedicated breeders. However, unless these talents are appreciated by a broader equestrian community, demand for the ponies often lags behind, and it is difficult for breeders to be recognised and rewarded. The working background of all these breeds means they have retained the hardiness with which centuries of tough living conditions have imbued them, and their good sense and sound temperament makes them ideal for young riders and as driving ponies. Owners and exhibitors of all Native Pony breeds were warmly invited to take part in this season's event at Gosford Park.

For those who wish to get in contact with the N.I.Support Group for The Rare Breeds Survival Trust, their secretary is Mr.Graham Wilson. E-mail at grahamj.gwilson@btinternet.com

Some photographs are posted already, and more will be done to complete the collection.
