GLENDUN SUE FOURTH AT CLIFDEN
LOOSE JUMPING.
John and Philomena McKay's homebred filly proved her athleticism at the Clifden loose- jumping final held at the show and finished 4th in her class. Pictured here with her owner near the showground, is 'Suzie'. John says of his 3 y-o that
" As a foal, she was 1st in Ballymena Show- qualifying her for Country Comes to Town
All Ireland Champion Connemara Foal Final. She is a very light-footed, lively pony who
is very enthusiastic about her jumping. It seems to come naturally to her.
She was placed 1st at the Clifden qualifier in Ecclesville. She has a great temperament
and is very easy to work with. " John plans that Suzie will be started and backed over
these next few months. She is bred from the same mare as the McKay's very sucessful
Kingstown Boy mare, Glendun Misty Dawn.

BALLINALEE JUNIOR CHAMPION

GALLOON ORCHID
with James and Geraldine Naan.
Proving herself a very worthy daughter to Newtown Golden Rose was James' home bred yearling filly, Galloon Orchid. By Monaghanstown Pat, she won the yearling filly class and then took pride of place amongst some serious competition.
Commenting on his tremendous sucess at the Show in Ballinalee on Sunday last, James described his feeling as " 'Shocked' was the word which sprung to mind. I just went into the Championship to make up the numbers, as we had a lovely 3 year old colt, Ben Bán Cracker Jack, Tom McLochlainn's 3yr old filly ( Ashbrook Órga ) which won several Championships last year, and John Riordans 2yr old filly - also a winner. I even treasured my red rosette so much I did not want to ruin it, ( it was a wet day - editor ) so I did not put it on her, and when I was pulled in I thought we were just going in in any order. It wasn't until I saw the others leaving the ring I realised I had won."
Is it any wonder he felt like Gene Kelly after all that , and ended up
'Singin' in the rain, just singin' in the rain,
What a glorious feelin' I'm happy again !
I walk down the lane, with a happy refrain,
Singin' , and dancing in the rain...'
Congratulations from everyone in the NICPBA !
The Newtownbutler family have done us all proud !

BALLYMENA BELLE !

After what was a chilly day at Ballymena Show,
Sammy Wilson's homebred filly helped warm the hearts of
the family, as Mr.Wilson's daughter, Betty, writes :-
"So pleased with Dad's 2 year old filly "Brownhill Heather".
(dam - Loughfadda Galloon Dawn , sire Moyan's Little Monkey).
Got 2nd place at Ballymena Show on 28th May. My husband
Johnny's going to give up farming and take up horse handling !!!"
Congratulations from the NICPBA !
The speaker for the educational meeting held on April 28th in the Lower Maze Hall,
Halftown, Maze, was Mr. David Elwood , whose interest in Homeopathy was first stirred
almost 40 years ago, when his wife was given a remedy to ease the teething pain of his
baby son. It proved effective the very first night it was administered, and as the saying has it,
business has never looked back ! Highly experienced and very knowledgeable, David
established the Homeopathic Veterinary Supply company in Downpatrick in 1986. He
caters for all sectors of livestock farming, and, increasingly, with the equine sector.
He began his talk by introducing his audience to the history behind the developement of
Homeopathy, illustrating his narrative with a power-point presentation and relating the
story of the founding father of this particular branch of alternative medicine, Samuel
Hahnemann. Hahnemann practised in late 18th and early 19th century Germany, when
physicians commonly took very drastic measures to attempt to 'cure' their suffering
patients. In those times, blood-letting, blistering and all manner of catharses were
commonplace. His initial discovery of the relationship between symptoms and causes
providing a sucessful outcome upon his first client, he went on to experiment on himself in
order to investigate many more potential remedies. His use of the principles of vaccination
to tackle a wide epidemic of scarlet fever in the 1820s gave his methods the credibilty he
needed, when significantly more of his treated patients recovered than those cared for in
the traditional way. His writing make mention of what he termed 'The Life Force', which we
today would equate with and understand as 'The Immune System'. All his sucesses were
achieved without wielding either a saw or a scalpel, and Homeopathy became an accepted
form of medicine.
David went on to mention and outline specific remedies, and cited case histories from his
many years involved with farmers and veterinary practices. There were also contributions
from the audience, concerning both human and animal health. Another aspect of the talk
was about the vital importance of a balanced diet, with particular reference to minerals, as
the basis of health. Often disease is but an indicator of the absence of health - improve the
diet, and the creature, be it man or beast, recovers. This Holistic approach is increasingly
being appreciated as we come to understand more fully how to care properly for ourselves
and our animals. The informal nature of the evening led to a very relaxed atmosphere, with
questions invited at any time during the proceedings, and as a result, we had a case history
regarding a cat with opthalmological problems, a dog with dermatitis and digestive
issues, and what to do about 'flu vaccines which seem to cause, rather than prevent,
influenza !
There were leaflets for all listing recommended Homeopathic First Aid Remedies for
Horses, and leaflets for some of the products sold through HVS Animal Health.
Those wishing to follow up on the subjects mentioned are directed to
The NICPBA would like to express their appreciation to Mr.David Elwood for his most illuminating discourse, and to Nola Gray of the NICPBA committee for organising the meeting. Even some of the sceptics are considering using a remedy or two - as was pointed out by Nola, humans may demonstrate a placebo effect, but a horse or a cow cannot know what they are being given - so if it works on them,
it cannot just be 'all in the mind ' !
