Galloon Ceol Takes Connemara Championship

NICPBA Secretary, James Naan, and his grand-daughter Aimée, with the Connemara Champion from the NPS Native Show held at Knockagh View on August 29th.  Galloon Ceol is James' homebred 3 y-o colt, and he has been following in his dam's hoofprints, having been chosen as Champion several times this season. He was named Supreme Champion at the NPS FInals held in July at Clougher Valley, beating many of the most decorated ponies in the country. His sire, Murphy's Oscar, stands with Philip McMahon near Belturbet, Co.Cavan, and the dam, Newtown Golden Rose, was bred by James' good friend, Pete Kyne from Moycullen, Co.Galway.  Thanks to James for sending on this photograph, and well done to the Naan family !
Reserve Champion Connemara was John McKay's Glendun Misty Dawn, his 3 y-o grey-dun by Kingstown Boy. Congratulations to John, Philomena and daughter Eimer from their fellow NICPBA members !

Great Results For Northern Breeders At Mainland Connemara Show

Those who keep in touch with happenings on the mainland  will be aware that the Northern Connemara Show, held near Blackburn, Lancashire over the weekend of July 25th was cause for celebration among our own breeders. Rickamore Ciara, bred by Pamela Megahey, was first in a 20-strong class for barren mares and geldings. Her owner was soon on the mobile to let Pam know when the 6 y-o dun Moy Hazy Cove mare ( ex Drumminroe Fergie ( by Abbeyleix Owen ) ) also came first in the novice ridden and fifth in the intermediate ridden.  A great day out indeed !
Derrylin breeder, Tony Maguire, was represented by his Village Boy pony, Derrylin Rover, out of the grey Lady C, was placed 4th in the ridden class for part-bred or overheight Connemaras. Derrylin Rover is owned by Mrs.M.Hollands, and also came second in the Working Hunter section of the show. Tony's ponies graze the slopes around Slieve Rushen in Co.Fermanagh, where the view is one of the best in the country !
And Helen Troughton's Song of Freedom horse, Silken Ruler, clocked up three wins for Monserrat Sports Horses by taking both the Ridden and Working Hunter titles for the part-bred and overheight section, before being chosen as Section Champion. Congratulations to all concerned !

Castlewellan Show had a magnificent turnout of Connemara Ponies in their Ridden Mountain & Moorland Classes, with 13 of the 15 ponies forward representing Ireland's native breed. Judge, Mrs. Madge Taylor, from York, having dressed for the 'soft ' Irish weather, spent an enjoyable time scrutinising the talented mounts before her, choosing the five year old Abbey Storm Fionn as her class winner and Champion.  By Abbeyfort out of Stormbird, Mr.& Mrs. Belford's pony is thriving under the tutelage of Sylvia Henry, having already proven his ability in the Dressage Championships at Cavan earlier this spring. Fionn is a pony to be proud of ! Second was Annaghdown Cloonahinch Moonlight, ridden by Euan McCracken and owned by his grandfather, Mr.William Truesdale. This pony, who has many sucesses under his girth, so to speak, also competes in working hunter classes, and was Reserve Champion Connemara earlier in the day.  Third place was awarded to Ceide Rose, ridden for her mother, Nicola, by Clare Brown from Downpatrick. Rose's son, Craigmount Sparrow, was also in the line-up with sister Caitlin aboard.

New to the In-Hand Connemara classes, and we bid them welcome on behalf of the N.I.Connemara Pony Breeders Association, were two new exhibitors. One was Diana Stewart, from Kircubbin, with her very well made two year old, Ceide Dew.  By Glenayre Silver Fox, the grey filly hails from the same breeder as Ceide Rose - Mr. Tony Darcy of Ballycastle. Co.Mayo. Competing in-hand for the first time was young Sophie Anstey, with her 9 year old Boden Park Finnard gelding, Millparks Tadgh Darragh. Darragh is well known in dressage and working hunter rings, and is a prime example of the versatility of the breed. His dam, Lizabelle, was by Loobeen Larry (S 670)
