Connemara Pony Reigns Supreme At Olympia In NPS Baileys Horse Feeds

Ridden Mountain And Moorland Championship 2007

Connemara Stallion Bunowen Castle Ri made history on 20th December 2007 at Olympia, The London International Horse Show, by becoming only the second ever to record a second championship win in the prestigious NPS Bailey’s Horse Feeds Mountain and Moorland Supreme Ridden Championships.

Winner 2005 and 2007 - Bunowen Castle Ri owned by Jackie Webb and ridden by Matthew Lawrence coming forward to receive their prize. They received 47marks for ride and 47 for conformation. Total 94.

Sydserff Lord of the Dance owned by Mrs J McCallum and ridden by Kirsten Douglas coming forward to take their overall 4th prize. They gained 46 points for ride and 43 for conformation. Total 89.

The Connemara pony Rosenaharley Rossleague was until now the first and only pony to have previously won the championship twice taking the championship sash in 1983 and 1984.

Jackie Webb’s grey stallion was ridden by his regular rider Bristol based Matthew Lawrence, with who he won the title in 2005. “For four years he has won through to this final and for four years he has tried his hardest for me,” said Matthew. “He is just exceptional.”

It will however be the last time that Ri graces the ring at Olympia as he has been retired from ridden classes. “He was always going to be retired after today – but I have several young offspring by him so hopefully in a few years his name at least will be back at Olympia,” said Jackie Webb.

The Superb Connemara Pony has won this M and MChampionship 10 times! which is more than double! the number of times any other M and M breed has won the event!

  • 2007 Bunowen Castle Ri Connemara
  • 2005 Bunowen Castle Ri Connemara
  • 2004 Castle Comet Connemara
  • 1995 Marwood Doon Caedmon Connemara
  • 1991 Tiercel Mystical Connemara
  • 1985 Phineas Phinn Connemara
  • 1984 Rosenaharley Rossleague Connemara
  • 1983 Rosenaharley Rossleague Connemara
  • 1982 Grayswood Village Peregrine Connemara
  • 1980 Rosenaharley Laurin Connemara

The Championship has been going since 1978, generously sponsored by Baileys Horse Feeds. It has made a considerable impact on the Mountain and Moorland fraternity, witness the quality of ponies that are now qualifying to appear in the Final. The ponies appearing in the final have qualified from Shows throughout the UK. On average 50 ponies compete at each qualifying round.

35 Champion ponies came forward from qualifiers all over the country thoughout the year to compete for the title of Champion Ridden Mountain and Moorland Pony of the Year.

There is also an award, the Transy Trophy, for the breeder of the Champion Pony and the Gordon Winter Perpetual Trophy for rider of the Champion Pony.

November AGM

It was voted at the AGM on Monday 19thNovember by members that for 2008 the membership fee would be increased to £15 in place of £10, so that the NICPBA can offer more training, information days and events in 2008.

Connemara Driving Ponies

Earlier in the year, Joe Topley’s grey mare, Priscilla, was 3rd in the Private Driving Class at the RUAS. It was a poignant occasion, because Joe gave the honour of driving his mare to his great friend, Cecil Bunting. Cecil, a Lurgan man born and bred, was very proud of the fact that he had been the first man ever to drive a Connemara at Balmoral, a few years ago, and despite failing health was determined to drive Joe’s mare again. This he did, and then in June he attended Lurgan Show, just as he had every single year on over 70 occasions ! Cecil was one of the hardest working members on the committee of his local show, and could always be depended on as a man of his word. He also assisted our NICPBA members at The Country Comes to Town last year, even though he was not feeling his best. His stoic acceptance of his illness and cheerful zest for living life to the full carried him beyond all expectation, and when he passed away at the end of July, the horse world lost one of it’s most ardent enthusiasts.

On a happier note, Junior Member Edward Goodwin, son of John, recently returned from competition in Cork with no fewer than five cups to his credit ! He and his 11.2 pony, Toby, earned our heartiest congratulations at the recent committee meeting, when we learned the news from John’s friend, Tony Walsh. Although not on committee, John has, at the request of the committee, approached member Robert McCrum of Millers Hill Equestrian in Markethill, in order to organise an outing to the custom–built driving centre in the near future. Robert will soon have some driving ponies available for teaching purposes, and we can all try our hands at beating the driving contingent at their own game ! The arena will also allow our younger members a chance for some competition, with perhaps a combination of skills on test, as well as darn good fun ! A supper will be available at Millers Hill, and details will be advertised nearer the time.

The Country Comes to Town Festival and Connemara Pony Show

It is hoped that members have already been kept abreast of our flagship event in the farming press, and if anyone missed all the fun, we can print off the press report and send a copy if you wish ! Suffice it to say, the Show was blessed with both fine weather and grand company ! The ponies were stunning, and entries were improved in both numbers and the quality of the stock. It was great too, to see so many of the junior members do so well ! The judges, Messrs. Curran and Heanue, judged ! Our inestimable steward, Joan Boyd, dealt with all in her customary pleasant and efficient manner, and Mr. Robert McCarthy kept everyone up to date with the proceedings in the four rings in his capacity as announcer. The entire committee were well supported, and wish to thank the members for representing the Association so creditably, both in the ring and beside it ! Chiefly we express our appreciation to the Committee of The Country Comes to Town, who have for the third year provided us with the invaluable opportunity to show our ponies in such scenic surroundings, and all the financial backing that entails. David Morrison has had to wear two hats these last several months, having taken over as CCtT Show Director, and from all the positive feedback which has been received, he made a very professional job of the entire event in the park ! Film was taken on the day by Leo Larkin, and will soon be available on DVD for anyone who wishes to purchase a copy .It would be helpful if those who would like a copy to contact either David Morrison ( 077 3321 0313 ) or the secretary ( 078 2153 9996 ) in order to estimate demand.

Report on Cavan Sales

Quite a number of folk travelled to Cavan to view the sales, mostly for an education it seems, since as it was the first time Cavan has run a Connemara Sale, as such, and it was more a case of trying the water than plunging in. The venue itself is certainlywell equipped, with the opportunity for buyers to see and ponies be seen as well as individual stabling. The cuisine and catering facilities were second to none, and one can view the ring from above, though not the display screen for the prices, unless seated along the side gallery. Naturally those of us in the position of selling stock would like to see Cavan develop further, if only because of it’s proximity to the North.

With around 170 lots catalogued, the sale began with foals. Only 9 filly foals were forward, all good stock and making €3000 plus, topping with Mrs.R.Traynor of Enniskillen’s dun by Moyans Little Monkey at €4100 ( £2929 ). A lovely make of a Thunder Bay filly was rerun after being discovered to be out of an unregistered mare, and was a bargain at €600. Colts were much more numerous, but more variable in size and strength, those sold mostly making from €1200 - €1600. The best price accepted was €3200, by Mrs. McVitty from Garrison, for a Lough Fee Prince colt.

Yearling colts sold to €1750 for a Drumlane Warrior, while of the 8 yearling fillies sold, the best price was €5900 for a Kilmore Diamond out of a Premium mare. Higher prices were refused for some of the better quality colts.

Eleven 2 year olds fillies sold to €7200, with two making the same top price. One was by Castlestrange Fionn, and the second by Sweetwall Captain Courageous and in foal to Gwennic de Goariva. The best of the 3 year old fillies sold was an in foal Murphy Rebel out of an Ormond Oliver mare, and she changed hands at €7300. However the general feeling was that Clifden prices should be better, and only 4 three year old fillies were actually sold. Of the mares 4 y-o and over, the best price accepted was €8000 for a 4 y-o Ashfield Romeo mare, in foal to Corrib Prince.

Of the two stallions forward, only one was sold. Mrs.Louise Dunlop had produced her 4 y-o dun, Clones Cliff ( by Robe Earl ) to perfection. A pony ‘of the old stamp’, he made €7500.

In the ridden stock, there were quite a lot of three year old ponies, broken and riding, but the best prices were €8200 for a seven year old Cloonisle Cashel gelding with plenty of successes already behind him, closely followed by the appealingly named ‘Willy John Magee’, a 4 y-o by Gleann Rua Maxwell with lots of potential.

R.D.S. Connemara Championship Awarded to Edenmist Prince of Thieves

Celebrations are in order for the county of Kildare, after Denise Norton of Edenmist Stud in Kilcullen took the 2007 Royal Dublin Society Connemara Championship with her homebred stallion, Edenmist Prince of Thieves. This superb golden dun son of Prince of Thieves, and grandson of The Fugitive, has achieved the outstanding sucess at only 4 years of age, following on from his being chosen as The Clifden Junior Champion in 2006. The late Clair Studdert would be bursting with pride ! Garryhack Pride, no doubt !

Congratulations are offered from all the relations 'up North', particularly from Uncle Fugi (Song of Freedom) and Cousin Nippy (Donegreagh Applejack) !

The Reserve Championship was awarded to Connemara based breeder Robbie Fallon's 2 year old grey filly, Cashelbay Mary. She is by Frederiksminde Hazy Match, and is also homebred. Interesting that both ponies represent the purest Connemara lines, the Red and the Green respectively.

Photographs of the R.D.S. can be viewed on Suzanne Lehmann's website, at www.photo-job.com/shop

NICPBA

Meeting in the Chestnut Lodge, Moira On July 19th

A very enjoyable and sucessful meeting was held, with good attendance despite the many other calls upon our members at this time of year. Several members who were showing at Balmoral earlier in the day still made the effort to attend, and the two main topics of pony registration and suggestions of Gaelic names for Connemara ponies created much interest and discussion.

The evenings entertainment was enhanced by the presentation of a slideshow of many photographs taken at shows & events this year including:

  • NI Working Hunter Show at Laurelview in April
  • Royal Ulster Agricultural Show at Balmoral
  •
    Lurgan Show
  • Ballinalee Show
  • Armagh Show
  • Omagh Show
  • Castlewellan Show

There was also a review of last years Country Comes To Town and a slideshow of the Offical Connemara Pony Photos taken on the day.

At the conclusion of the evening Mr. James Naan (Chairman) presented Mrs. Anne Murphy with the Border Fine Arts figurine of a Connemara Mare and Foal. Mrs. Murphy was the delightedwinner of the draw held during the May meeting, andreceived theprizeforthe membership promotion held earlier in the year.

Pictured Below Mrs.A Murphy being presented with the figurine by the Chairman Mr. James Naan.

Mr. James Naan himself was also surprised to be presented with a gift, handed over on behalf of the Junior NICPBA members by Euan McCracken. James and his wife Geraldine have over the past fortnight been host to a little girl named Alexandra (known as Sacha) who is one of the 'Chernobyl children'. They have found her to be a delightful child, and she absolutely adores their ponies, so we trust she will enjoy her gift.

 CPBS Summer Newsletter - June 16th 2007

CPBS President, Mr.Tómas MacLochlainn, opened this seasons newsletter with the aspiration that breeders are happy with this years crop of foals. He went on to write that the concept of combining some of this springs colt inspections with the Stallion Parade in Clifden during March had been very successful. Additional interest had been provided by lectures and workshops organised at the same time, and the event ran so well that the Society plan to repeat the formula in the future. A DVD of the Stallion Parade is available, featuring all the stallions who attended, and costing €20 plus €3 p+p from the Clifden office. He congratulated and encouraged the organisers and helpers at Shows and events all over the country on behalf of everyone who exhibits at or attends those events. The CPBS announced that they are in the process of setting up an International Database of Connemara Ponies. This will be hosted on the Society website, www.cpbs.ie, and will include breeding and pedigree information on all registered ponies entered in any of the Connemara Studbooks. The plan is that it will be possible to call up the individual ponies simply by entering their name, registered number or country of origin. It is stated that owners and breeders should ensure transfer of ownership forms are submitted promptly, as all data called forth will depend on up to date information being logged on the database. This is a development, which will be greatly welcomed by all serious breeders and buyers, and will save much research time!

Colt Inspections 2007

From 131 colts presented, 47 were awarded Grade One – equivalent to full approval under the old system. The remaining 84 achieved Grade Two, and are eligible for re-classification at a future date, subject to height and to veterinary inspection. From 2008 onwards, all colts presented for inspection must be a minimum of three years old.

CPBS Council Elections 2007

The A.G.M. of the CPBS was held on April 1st., and Messrs. Eamon Hannan, Padraic Hynes and Joe Mac Lochlainn were re-elected. Tommy John Joyce, John Joe O’ Neill and Henry Kelly were newly elected to the Council. Mr.Tómas Mac Lochlainn was declared President, and Messrs. Micéal Higgins and Tómas Keaney elected as joint Vice-Presidents. The Treasurer is Mr.Gearóid Curran and the Honorary Secretary Mr.John Riordan.
